Hawthorn Half Day is designed to be flexible, welcoming, and approachable — whether this is your first endurance event or your twentieth. Below are answers to the questions we hear most often.

Is This Race Right for Me?

  • No. You don’t need prior ultra experience to participate. Many runners and walkers choose Hawthorn Half Day because it’s approachable, flexible, and supportive. Experience is optional.

  • Yes. Many participants use Hawthorn Half Day as their first ultra or first timed event. The looped course, frequent aid station access, and flexible format make it an ideal introduction to longer endurance efforts.

  • No. Many people register early and build toward the race gradually. You don’t need a fixed pace or distance goal to sign up — just a willingness to show up and see what the day brings.

  • It can be — but it doesn’t have to be. Some participants are chasing miles or awards, while others focus on time on feet, personal goals, or sharing the experience with friends. You choose your pace and your purpose.

How the Race Format Works

  • You run or walk as many laps as you want within your chosen time limit (6 or 12 hours). There is no required distance. Your race day ends when you decide you’re done — or when time runs out.

  • No. You can take breaks, walk, rest, or stop whenever you need. Many participants mix running and walking throughout the day.

  • Yes. Most participants adjust as the day unfolds. You can decide lap by lap how you feel and what you want your day to look like. Plans are welcome. Flexibility is encouraged.

  • In the final 30 minutes of the race, participants switch to a shorter half-mile loop. At that point, no one starts a new 3.1-mile lap. This keeps everyone closer to the finish line and allows you to maximize your remaining time safely.

Teams, Walking & Flexibility

  • Yes. Walking is completely normal and part of how many participants manage the day. You’re free to mix running and walking however you choose. If you register as a walker, please follow the official walker rules outlined on the race website.

  • Teams run one lap at a time in a set order. Relay teams are flexible and supportive, making them a great option for friends, clubs, coworkers, or first-time participants.

  • That’s okay. Many participants race without a personal crew. The looped course, runner village, and aid station provide consistent support throughout the day.

  • That’s completely fine. You are never required to continue. Your race day is defined by what feels right for you.

Race Weekend Basics

  • Yes. Camping is available in the park and is a popular option for participants and teams who want to make a full weekend of it. Stay close, rest easy — and yes, keep an eye on the geese 🪿

  • Yes. The looped course brings you back to the start/finish area every lap, making it easy to access your gear, food, and support.
